In this study of outdoor recreation participation, rock climbing is included in the top five activites for growth in number of participants through 2060. “Challenge activities,” including mountain climbing, rock climbing and caving, are projected to grow 50-86% in this period. According to the report, access to public lands for activites such as rock climbing may rise in importance relative to other activites.
The report shows a 9.5% increase in rock climbing participants in the ten year period from 1999-2009. In there period of 2005-2009 almost 10 million people participated in rock climbing annually.
