Main Street Park Alliance Brings Modern Outdoor Bouldering to Chelsea

As public parks continue to offer more engaging experiences, climbing has become a popular way to encourage healthy, active lifestyles while creating memorable community spaces. At Main Street Park in Chelsea, Michigan, the Main Street Park Alliance (MSPA) brought their vision to life with the installation of custom outdoor boulders from Eldorado Climbing.

A Modern Take on Outdoor Climbing

Unlike many artificial outdoor boulders that mimic natural rock, this project called for a clean, architectural aesthetic. Eldorado Climbing engineered and fabricated smooth, planar boulders that complement the park's modern design while delivering an exciting climbing experience. And because the boulders are made with concrete, the City of Chelsea can expect the boulders to last decades with very low maintenance.

"Our designers wanted something more modern, and Eldorado delivered exactly what we envisioned," said Joe Ziolkowski of the Main Street Park Alliance. "The boulders blend in perfectly with the rest of the park and add a beautiful design element to the space."

The custom boulders are a signature feature within Main Street Park, providing a unique place for people of all ages to climb, play, and gather. The installation encourages physical activity, builds confidence, and creates opportunities for community connection while reinforcing the park's contemporary identity.

"It's the only thing like it in the area, and the climbing community is really excited about it," Ziolkowski added.

Collaboration That Delivered

The project's success was the result of close collaboration between the Main Street Park Alliance, Viridis Design Group, Construction Design Services, the City of Chelsea, and Eldorado Climbing. From design through installation, the team worked together to ensure the finished product met the project's aesthetic goals while staying on schedule.

"Working with Eldorado was outstanding from beginning to end," said Ziolkowski. "Whenever there was an obstacle, they were immediately on top of it. They communicated regularly throughout the entire process, solved problems quickly, and made everything remarkably easy. There were no headaches, just a great team that delivered exactly what they promised."

The climbing installation is part of a broader effort to transform a long-blighted industrial property into a vibrant public destination. In August 2023, MSPA purchased the 2.8-acre site from Magellan Development Corporation, where it had previously been owned and operated by Federal Screw Works. That same year, MSPA signed a Development Agreement with the City of Chelsea, committing to redevelop the property into a public park that will ultimately be owned, operated, and maintained by the City.

The project aligns with Chelsea's Master Plan by revitalizing a historic downtown site, expanding public green space, and strengthening community connectivity. In partnership with MSPA, the City of Chelsea has helped secure approximately $2 million in environmental remediation funding while leading grant administration, environmental planning, design coordination, and long-term sustainability efforts. Together, the partnership is creating a lasting community asset that will serve Chelsea for generations.
